Today, less than 15 per cent of students still fit into this mold. “The new traditional learner is an adult looking to take classes to improve professionally or increase employability,” said Shaul Kuper, President and CEO of Destiny Solutions. “Students today desire just–in-time learning, need education for employability [and] are interested in learning outcomes derived from education as well as life experiences.” The shift away from the traditional learner has been happening for years. Recently, Kuper said a subtler one has occurred—in the face of budget cuts and major restructurings, university administrators have come to realize the importance of the lifelong learner. Kuper said “the lifetime return on investment of a lifelong learner is far greater than that of a traditional student.” However, administrators have had a difficult time wrapping their head around the ‘new traditional’ learner. “To quote one provost ‘we know this has happened, but it is not what we signed up for,’“ Kuper said. Nonetheless, in an age where education and knowledge are turning into highly valued commodities, administrators have had no choice but to respond. Today’s learners are acting more like consumers than ever before. Each one expects to be treated as an individual with programs geared directly towards their cohort of one. At a private dinner held in conjunction with the annual University Professional and Continuing Education Association conference in Toronto in April, Kuper unveiled a new strategy for schools to engage lifelong learners.
