they are established components of institutional strategy. Yet new research from Modern Campus, conducted in partnership with UPCEA and The EvoLLLution, finds that many institutions are struggling to move from early adoption to sustained impact. As microcredentials shift from pilot initiatives to long-term commitments, the research shows institutions are reaching a critical inflection point. This moment demands a clearer strategy, stronger coordination and modern infrastructure to support scale. The **2026 Institutional Perspectives on Microcredentials Report** draws on survey data collected from colleges and universities in late 2025 to assess how institutions are developing, scaling and sustaining microcredential offerings. While the research confirms that microcredentials are widely viewed as essential for workforce alignment and professional advancement, it also reveals growing gaps between intent and execution. **From Early Wins to Structural Foundations** The report shows that microcredentials have moved beyond experimentation, particularly within professional, continuing and workforce education. Most institutions now design these offerings with explicit employment outcomes in mind. However, broader institutional adoption has slowed and perceived fiscal impact has declined. This is signaling that microcredentials are often operating outside integrated credential strategies. This dynamic is raising expectations for how institutions design workforce-aligned credentials that can compete and scale within an increasingly complex credential economy.   Key findings include: - **Workforce relevance is now foundational**, with 85% of institutions designing microcredentials for workforce development and 84% for professional advancement - **Engagement in credential development continues to grow**, though many institutions are still working to translate that momentum into enterprise-wide strategy - **Leaders are reassessing how microcredentials contribute to revenue and enrollment goals**, highlighting the importance of clearer connection with institutional priorities - **Scaling microcredentials increasingly depends on addressing operational realities**, including resourcing models, governance structures and legacy systems - **Institutions that align credentials with broader strategy report **improved mission alignment and greater ability to compete with nontraditional providers **What Differentiates Institutions That Move Forward** Rather than pointing to a lack of demand, the research highlights the importance of coordination across academic units, leadership, technology and external partners. Institutions that embed microcredentials into broader planning efforts, connect them to career pathways and support them with modern systems report greater confidence in their ability to adapt and compete. “This moment isn’t about proving the value of microcredentials,” said Shauna Cox, Editor-in-Chief of The EvoLLLution. “It’s about creating the conditions for them to scale sustainably.
