Voices of Modern Campus: What’s New in CMS

The way that learners discover and engage with information about higher ed has evolved. For institutions, a Content Management System (CMS) sits at the center of that experience.

What began as a simple publishing tool has become a key piece of infrastructure that drives marketing, enrollment, accessibility, and student success.

In today’s AI-driven information landscape, a CMS is also a discoverability engine, helping determine whether an institution is part of a learner’s search journey at all.

As Product Manager for Modern Campus CMS, Cory Madden brings over eleven years of experience helping institutions navigate this shift. A former Modern Campus customer himself, Cory has firsthand experience with the challenges and operational pressures higher ed teams face every day.

In this edition of Voices of Modern Campus, Cory shares his perspective on how modern CMS platforms can help institutions deliver more timely and personalized learner experiences, while reducing operational friction behind the scenes.

Here’s what he had to say:

Cory: I consistently think about how to help institutions strengthen their impact on learner communities without forcing disruptive changes to how they already operate. Many teams are balancing limited resources, complex governance, and established processes. The challenge is to deliver meaningful improvements without adding burden.

I focus on how our product can reduce friction in everyday workflows. I’m always looking for opportunities to help teams move faster and with more confidence. It all comes down to helping institutions do what they already do well, but in a way that’s simpler, more effective, and more scalable.

2. What part of Modern Campus CMS’s evolution excites you the most right now?

Cory: Our CMS sits at the center of a major shift in how people discover and engage with information. As AI continues to reshape the landscape, it’s becoming essential for institutions to deliver relevant, timely content that adapts to evolving user behaviors. A content management solution is uniquely positioned to power that shift.

It’s no longer just about managing content. It’s about intelligently delivering the right experience to the right audience at the right moment. It’s incredibly exciting to be at the forefront of that transformation and help institutions connect with learners in more meaningful and personalized ways.

3. How does CMS support the needs of modern learners across generations, motivations, and learning paths?

Cory: Modern learners expect information to be available at an instant and delivered seamlessly. They expect it to be accurate, accessible, and easy to consume. Modern Campus CMS supports this in a number of ways: it makes sure that the final webpage only includes what’s needed, has configurable stale reminders for when a page is deemed out of date, has tools to test webpage content for accessibility, and allows for governance controls to make sure content aligns with an institution’s brand standards.

4. Can you share a moment when a customer insight influenced your thinking or direction?

Cory: It’s difficult to pick just one! I often come back to my time as a customer using Modern Campus CMS before joining the company. That gave me first-hand experience with the challenges our customers face day-to-day.

As a customer, success was not only about features, but also about how easily you could get others aligned, trained, and confident. That perspective continues to influence how I think about our work today. It has shifted my focus towards making sure our solutions support not just the primary user, but the broader ecosystem around them.

5. When you think about long-term partnerships with customers beyond go-live, what does success look like for you?

Cory: Success looks different for every institution depending on their goals, challenges, and maturity. For some, it’s very outcome-driven: increasing enrollment, improving conversion rates, or better engaging prospective students. For others, it’s more operational, and is all about reducing friction in content management.

What matters most to me is that success is clearly defined together and continues to evolve. Go live is just the starting point. Ultimately, long term success is about being a trusted partner, not just a vendor. It means we are proactively identifying opportunities, helping them navigate challenges, and ensuring the platform continues to grow with their needs rather than becoming something they outgrow.

6. Looking ahead, what do you see as the biggest opportunity for CMS to help institutions operate with more clarity, confidence, and resilience?

Cory: Expectations continue to evolve, especially with AI and changing content discovery habits. I see a big opportunity to help institutions become more adaptive in how they deliver digital experiences. Users expect information to be intuitive, personalized, and easy to access, and many institutions are still working within more rigid structures.

My role is to help bridge that gap by enabling more dynamic, data-informed experiences—not just in how content is managed, but in how it is surfaced and optimized over time. There’s also a strong opportunity to simplify workflows and provide better insights into how content is performing.
